Community practical project by the Uban and landscape design Lab. Of Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University
This laboratory conducts research on the design of public spaces and urban infrastructure that harmonizes with and creates beautiful landscapes and cultural environments.
We concern ourselves with scenery and view area (the area over which similar scenery extends), referring to the environment in a broad sense that extends from nature to culture, embracing concepts of climatic and social topography as well as geographic area, along with our memories, understanding and image of those scenes. In this field, we begin by understanding spatial and chronological structure of and changes in scenery and view area through scenery analysis, topographical analysis, design surveys and analysis of historical materials. Next, to create cultural and beautiful scenery and view areas, we conduct research on the target images and design methodology that govern the design of the public spaces and urban infrastructure on which scenery and view areas are founded. We then aim to table practical proposals. One such effort was a 2019 project to design a pedestrian zone in the Nakanoshima district of Osaka. In this project, we examined the scenery in collaboration (subcontracting) with the construction consultant to whom the work was entrusted.
