Coalition of universities and other partners to achieve carbon neutrality
The University Coalition for Carbon Neutrality was launched in July 2021 as a campaign for carbon neutrality, operating under the guidance of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and Ministry of the environment (MOE).
The coalition functions as a forum where universities that are working toward carbon neutrality, or exploring ways to bolster their efforts toward carbon neutrality, can share and disseminate information. They created five working groups, each tasked with a different theme, to decide the directions and polices of the coalition. The coalition has three objectives:
1. Application across multiple fields of knowledge about the efforts of universities and other organizations
2. Application of research results in service to communities and development of research in response to society’s needs, through strengthened collaboration with local government, private enterprise, etc.
3. Improving ability to disseminate information throughout Japan and around the world
Kyoto Univesity is participating in a working group to conduct research and development to spur innovation toward carbon neutrality and apply research results in service to communities. Through the working groups, Kyoto University is exploring ways to create a forum where university researchers can develop revolutionary technologies in partnership with local government and private enterprise as the organizing body.
