Equations of cell motion drive future med and new tech
Cells shape our bodies under the universal physical law of force balance, following genetic instructions. To understand biological morphogenesis, I study the equations of cell motion, which mathematically describe how cells move and create structures. Just as Newton’s equations of motion advanced our understanding of celestial mechanics and enabled satellite operations, in the future, the equations of cell motion could help us grasp morphogenesis and develop technologies to manipulate cells to artificially create organs. Moreover, just as Newton’s equations are not limited to celestial bodies, the equations of cell motion are not limited to biological systems. Reproducing them in artificial materials could lead to new engineering technologies where materials autonomously form shapes.
