Creating new fruits enriching our lives

Hisayo Yamane
Graduate School of Agriculture

Fruits bring richness to our lives. My research interests focus on physiological and genetic studies on fruit and fruit trees. Because fruit trees are usually grown in open fields, they are greatly affected by ambient environments. Recently, climate change has begun to impact fruit production in not only Japan but also worldwide. Global warming has already affected the flowering, fruiting, and ripening of fruit trees. To enable sustainable fruit tree cultivation and fruit production, we must develop new varieties that can adapt to climate change and cultivation methods that can mitigate physiological disorders caused by climate change. Currently my research mainly focuses on blueberries. Using Nobel Prize-winning genome editing and other techniques, I am working to create new varieties that are tolerant to abiotic stress and produce high-quality fruit which appeals to customers.
