Ethics of coexistence: learning from eastern wisdom

Akira Fukutani
Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies

In Japanese society today, when hearing phrases like “mutual help and consideration,” many may feel burdened rather than inspired to take the initiative. On the other hand, extremely influential pre-modern East Asian ethical philosophies like the Cheng-Zhu and Yangming schools of Neo-Confucianism had the unique idea of naturally promoting coexistence with others based on universal human empathy. These philosophies started with the daily mindsets of individuals, led to community formation, and eventually created institutions and policies. I want to convey the value of Eastern wisdom as a rich source of insight for balancing personal happiness and social prosperity.
