Promoting well-being through sleep research

Emi Hasegawa
Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences

We all know the impact of sleep deprivation: disruptions in everyday life and worse physical and mental health. Chronic sleep deprivation or irregular sleep patterns can lead to the onset and worsening of various lifestyle diseases, cardiovascular disorders, mental illnesses, and dementia, and can also lead to economic losses. Although sleep is crucial for sustaining life, many aspects of its functions and the mechanisms regulating it remain unknown. I focus on neurotransmitters such as dopamine and orexin using advanced neuroscience tools to investigate the physiological roles of sleep. By deepening our understanding of sleep, a phenomenon that is both familiar and mysterious, I aim to contribute to new treatments and innovative medications for related disorders. I believe these studies will pave the way for healthier and happier communities.
