Reconstructing places and narratives
Graduate School of Letters
Many people have lost their hometowns and loved ones due to conflicts, persecution, and disasters. How do these people (re)construct places and records? I have been conducting fieldwork to investigate this in Bangladeshʼs Rohingya refugee camps and Rikuzentakata, a city in Iwate severely damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake. It became clear that new places were not necessarily created and their narratives were not necessarily recorded in the way these people wanted. I engage in my research while considering how researchers can contribute to these endeavors rather than taking away peopleʼs ownership of place-making and narratives.
