The mindʼs neural mechanisms

Masayuki Matsumoto
Center for the Evolutionary Origins of Human Behavior

In the human brain, tens of billions of neurons are connected by synapses, forming a complex network of neural circuits. It is believed that our “minds” are created by the functions of these circuits, but the mechanisms remain largely unknown. I aim to uncover how the mind is generated by revealing the neural circuits and principles behind psychological phenomena such as prediction, attention, decision-making, motivation, and emotion. To achieve this, I am researching monkeys, which have brains similar in structure to humans, using a combination of neurophysiological, neuropharmacological, and genetic methods. The findings from this research will lead to the development of new diagnostic and treatment methods for mental and neurological disorders.
