Longevity and amino acid residues
The proteins in our bodies are primarily made up of L-type amino acid residues. Recently, D-type amino acid residues, mirror images of the usual L-type amino acid residues, have been found in proteins associated with age-related diseases like cataracts and Alzheimer’s. However, their significance is unclear. Uncovering the meaning of D-type amino acid residues in proteins is my life’s work. This research holds great social significance as we face an aging population and could help solve many mysteries of life, such as why life chose L-type amino acid residues for proteins at the “origin of species.” I aim to extend the human healthspan and shed light on the mysteries of life phenomena by studying D-type amino acid residues.
