Smart river management: linking mountains to the sea

Sameh Ahmed Kantoush
Disaster Prevention Research Institute

I am developing real-time monitoring technology for flash floods, sediment transport, and changes in river basin morphology and environments. My research focuses on understanding the impact of human activities, such as dam construction, irrigation development, deforestation, and sand mining, on river environments and deltas. It aims to enhance river ecosystems and improve the resilience of communities near rivers that are vulnerable to climate and natural impacts. Additionally, I am sharing Japan’s knowledge and practices related to hydropower dams, reservoir sedimentation, dam management, flood management, and environmental management. I have also developed Wadi flash flood and water harvesting strategies. Ultimately, I aim to develop innovative integrated river basin management approaches that can be applied to rivers and Wadis worldwide that face similar challenges.
