Humans and trees: ancient wisdom to the future
Standing before a giant tree adorned with the ritual purification rope called a shimenawa, I clear my mind. Before a wooden statue, I reverently put my hands together. In a serene tearoom, I sharpen my senses over a cup of tea. Drawing vitality from vibrant new greenery. Though we live in convenient, prosperous times, anxieties about disasters, diseases, and conflicts persist, as they did for ancient people. We still find modest spiritual stability and fulfillment in nature and trees. I research tree species and ages from small wood fragments of old artifacts to understand ancient peoples’ hearts and minds. By examining their views on wood use, life, and death, and even their thoughts, I believe we can contribute to a truly harmonious global society where people can live peacefully and safely, hand in hand with nature.
