Investigating somatic cell evolution and overcoming disease

Humanity has overcome many diseases, yet many lives are still lost because we lack an understanding of their causes and effective treatments. Recent scientific and technological advances allow us to extract more patient information, complementing cell and animal experiments. Based on the principle of evolution in organismal genetics, we study the evolution of tens of trillions of cells within a single human body. While evolution generally occurs through diversity creation and environmental selection, it has been found that for individual cells, physiological phenomena, lifestyle habits, and diseases act as environmental factors, driving unique evolutionary processes. By investigating these cellular evolutions, we aim to unravel disease mechanisms and contribute to developing new treatments, ultimately creating a society where people can live healthier lives.
