Preventing climate-induced conflicts

Takashi Sekiyama
Graduate School of Advanced Integrated Studies in Human Survivability

Disasters induced by climate change or the implementation of mitigation and adaptation policies, such as carbon emission reductions and geoengineering, may precipitate confrontations or disputes among groups or nations. These may be driven by conflicts over the allocation of water, food, land, and energy resources, as well as by competing interests. Climate security, my field of research, concerns itself with disputes and conflicts caused by climate change. As climate change progresses, climate security risks may also increase. However, it is not inevitable that climate-induced conflicts will increase. Rather, the challenges presented by climate change could provide opportunities for cooperation. My objective is to contribute to the prevention of climate-induced conflicts by clarifying the extent and mechanisms of the impact of climate change on the international political economy.
