Contributing to international disaster preparedness research as secretariat for GADRI
The Global Alliance of Disaster Research Institutes (GADRI) is a research network whose aim is to contribute from an academic perspective to reduction of disaster risk and improvement of disaster resilience worldwide. GADRI members share information, knowledge, experience and philosophies with research institutes around the world that conduct disaster and disaster-preparedness research. As of April 2020, GADRI boasts 205 member institutions globally. As the Secretariat for GADRI, Kyoto University’s Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI) supports efforts to raise disaster and disaster-preparedness research to a more prominent place on the world stage.
To achieve its aims, GADRI is deploying activities with the following five targets.
- Formation of a world-scale network for academic research
- Contribution to the formation of roadmaps, research plans and research organizations for disaster-preparedness research
- Encouragement of exchange between researchers and students with the aim of improving the capabilities of research organizations in disaster-preparedness research
- Promotion of sharing of data and information for academic research on a global scale
- Coordination to ensure that GADRI speaks as one voice to maximize impact on decision-making
