Strengthening of partnership and cooperation between Hodaka Sedimentation Observatory, Research Center for Fluvial and Coastal Disasters, DPRI and the Jinzu River Sabo Office, MLIT

Disaster Prevention Research Institute(DPRI) Research Center for Fluvial and Coastal Disasters

The Research Center for Fluvial and Coastal Disasters conducts research in the following five domains:

  1. Sedimentation Disaster: The Center conducts research on measures to prevent and mitigate landslide disasters in entire areas where sediment moves, from mountain slopes to the ocean (the sediment transport system).
  2. Urban Flood Control: The Center conducts research on matters such as measures against natural disasters in urban areas located in coastal and riparian lowlands.
  3. River Disaster Prevention System: The Center aims to prevent and mitigate urban-flood, riparian and landslide disasters and to create spaces that cater to water lovers while protecting river ecosystems and scenery.
  4. Coastal Sedimentary Environment: The Center conducts research to prevent the erosion of Japan’s coastlines and flooding of reclaimed land.
  5. Field Research Section for Fluvial and Coastal Hazards: Based on data from observation posts in various locations, the Center conducts research on environments that are prone to disaster and mechanisms by which disasters occur.

In October 2020, the Center held a signing ceremony with the Jinzu River Sabo Office of the Hokuriku Regional Development Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) on a memorandum of agreement for partnership and cooperation regarding disaster preparedness. The partners will advance research, education and projects (both hardware and software) on the prevention and mitigation of volcanic-eruption disasters and landslide disasters.
