Prof. Yasuto Tachikawa
Graduate School of Engineering

Solving global issues is a common cause for all humanity. The UNESCO Chair on Water, Energy and Disaster Management for Sustainable Development at Kyoto University (WENDI) was established to cultivate people with the knowledge, skills and breadth of vision to find solutions to the wide range of issues that confront society today.
The purpose of UNESCO Chair WENDI is to establish interdisciplinary graduate courses, leveraging Kyoto University’s outstanding roster of researchers and instructors in the fields of water, energy and disaster management, to create an organization and curriculum that will earn recognition in Japan and around the world. UNESCO Chair WENDI offers the Higher Education and Research for Sustainable Development (HESD) Program, a program of guaranteed quality on education and research in sustainable development (HESD). The HESD Program was designed with deep respect for students’ autonomy of study, in cooperation with outstanding researchers and instructors at the United Nations, international organizations, other UNESCO Chairs and UNESCO Centers, government agencies, universities, research agencies and private-sector organizations. Its aim is to contribute to the achievement of the SDGs and formation of a resilient society.
