Material process innovation project focused on carbon recycling through a partnership between Kyoto University and JRI

Office of Society Academia Collaboration for Innovation

Japan is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. To that end, the University is partnering with the Japan Research Institute, Ltd. (JRI) to establish new material processes and industries based on “carbon recycling,” the capture and reuse in industrial processes of carbon dioxide released into the air.
Treating carbon dioxide as a commons, this project aims to design a series of industrial processes, from production of new materials from the carbon dioxide emitted in cement production to construction of “digital twins” for process control and discovery of new applications for products. An exploratory project was launched in January 2023.
