The Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), published in August 2021, stressed more than ever the importance of a unified global response to anthropogenic global warming. Beginning in 2022, Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) was launched the “MEXT-Program for The Advanced Studies of Climate Change Projection (SENTAN),” aimed at creating and providing a scientific basis that can be applied to efforts to respond to and mitigate climate change and achieve a carbon-free society.
The fourth research area in the program focuses on the development of an integrated hazard projection model, represented by Kyoto University’s Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI). In this research area, focus is placed on enhancing and integrating process models and forecasting future extreme phenomena, as a means of grappling with wind and water damage, water resources and various distinctive ecosystems. Over 100 scientists from four participating organizations, and 43 cooperating organizations, are moving forward with the construction of an “all-Japan” research framework.
