Tomorrowʼs urban mobility: promoting societal well-being

Jan-Dirk Schmöcker

The way we travel greatly impacts our lives. I aim to improve urban transportation systems for a safer, more sustainable and flourishing society. Visions for smart and sustainable cities vary, and defining a “perfect transport system” is challenging. Key factors include walkability, high-quality public transit, and minimizing congestion, but the best combination depends on various factors. My research addresses specific issues like public transit congestion caused by tourists and forecasting demand by integrating multiple data sources. I also engage in theoretical inquiries, such as the effects of new types of fare policies. Using mathematical modeling, data science, and simulations, I strive to bring together human behavior and economic and physical constraints. For me, this is what makes transportation such a fascinating field of study.
