Combating plant disease and climate change
Just like humans, plants get sick. Many plant diseases are caused by infectious microorganisms such as fungi, bacteria, and viruses. Throughout human history, famines have repeatedly arisen due to plant diseases. Even today, plant diseases pose a serious threat to food security. Ironically, global climate change triggered by human activity is predicted to increase their occurrence. To combat plant diseases in the face of global climate change, my research aims to gain a deeper understanding of how the rising temperatures and changes in precipitation brought about by the latter affect the former’s development. I anticipate that my research will ultimately help create plants that are resistant to diseases under climate change, contributing to future food security.
