The impact of marine geochemistry on humans

Linjie Zheng
Institute for Chemical Research

The ocean plays a vital role in regulating the Earth’s climate by absorbing carbon dioxide (CO₂) and heat that would otherwise exacerbate global warming. Marine geochemistry, a relatively young discipline, is crucial due to the role of biological processes in controlling the cycles of elements. In the ocean today, the distributions of bioactive trace metals are of great importance, as they can limit biological production and become toxic to organisms at high concentrations. I am studying the distributions of nine bioactive trace metals (Al, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) in the North Pacific Ocean, which is at the end of the thermohaline circulation. Reviewing the distributions of these trace metals in the ocean will help us enhance our understanding of their biogeochemical cycles, comprehend the impact of anthropogenic and lithogenic substances on marine plankton and, consequently, on the Earth’s climate.
