The pharmaceutical sciences: toward healthy longevity
I research and develop drugs that are useful for diagnosing and treating cancer and dementia. Unlike conventional drugs, the drugs I am developing—radiopharmaceuticals—release radiation. Radiation permeates substances and kills cells. In the medical field, these two properties are applied in diagnostic imaging and internal radiotherapy, respectively. By delivering radiopharmaceuticals to organs or cells causing disease, it is possible to simultaneously diagnose and treat illnesses. I work to develop such “two-in-one” drugs. I do my research because I want to deliver, from Kyoto University, the world’s first drug of this type to patients suffering from cancer and dementia as soon as possible and help realize healthy longevity around the world.
