Toward reconstituting human development in a dish
“What makes us human?” and “How are humans made?” are fundamental questions that lie at the heart of my research. Decades of studies using model organisms such as mice and chickens have shed light on the cellular and molecular mechanisms that guide complex life. Yet, our understanding of human biology remains limited, particularly the process of human embryo formation and development from a fertilized egg. To address this, our research team has established an ethically non-controversial model using human iPS cells, allowing us to reconstitute key aspects of human development and organ formation in vitro. I believe this marks the beginning of a new area in human biology research, offering fresh insights into our development, diseases, and evolution.
