Now is the time to revisit the atomic bombs

Koichi Takamiya

The Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings claimed many lives. The suffering continues even today. To ensure that such tragedies are never repeated, researchers must conduct thorough investigations and present their results widely. I have focused on traces of the Hiroshima atomic bomb, namely, microscopic particles containing the uranium loaded into the bomb. As shown in the photograph, I collected soil samples from a depth of 30 cm in Hiroshima, and by finding and analyzing these particles, I am re-examining the events within the mushroom cloud after detonation and how fallout such as “black rain” occurred. Through this research, I aim not only to reconsider the effects of the atomic bomb but also to contribute to the realization of a rational nuclear disaster prevention system.
