Understanding immunityʼs power: creating a healthy future for all

Yoko Hamazaki

The immune system is essential for protecting our bodies from pathogens like viruses and cancer. When its functions decline, infections can become more severe. In contrast, excessive immune reactions or regulatory issues can lead to autoimmune disorders, allergies, and metabolic diseases. The thymus, an organ located above the heart, produces T cells, the immune systemʼs key players, but its functions diminish starting early in life. My goal is to deeply understand the development and aging of T cells and the thymus to help prevent and treat human diseases. Using iPS cells, I am also working on developing technologies to regenerate thymic functions. By enabling flexible control or regeneration of the immune system on demand, I hope to contribute to a future society where people of all generations can live healthy lives.
