Building a future resilient to infectious threats

Miki Nagao
Graduate School of Medicine

Infectious diseases are caused by external organisms (pathogens) that invade the human body. They can occur regardless of living environment, pre-existing conditions, age, or race, and as long as humans coexist with microorganisms, complete eradication is difficult. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us that infectious diseases impact not only healthcare, such as testing and treatment, but also our social lives. Our lab studies pathogens that anyone can be infected by—such as drug-resistant bacteria, influenza, and COVID-19—and those that mainly affect individuals with weakened immune systems. We approach this research from a microbiological perspective, while also considering the broader social aspects of infectious diseases. Through collaboration across diverse fields, we explore clinical strategies to prevent the loss of loved ones from these infections.
