Creating organic molecules with eco-friendly tech

Hirohisa Ohmiya
Institute for Chemical Research

Many pharmaceuticals and functional materials are composed of organic molecules. These valuable organic molecules have been created through organic synthesis, a molecular-level manufacturing process that assembles molecules of various shapes, sizes, and properties—much like building with LEGO® blocks. However, traditional organic synthesis requires various reagents and multiple steps to gradually change molecules’ shape, size, and properties, requiring tremendous costs and time and imposing a significant burden on the environment. Therefore, I research to create a technology that can assemble valuable organic molecules as desired, regardless of their shape, size, or properties, using environmentally friendly reagents and energy sources.
