Preserving the geo-environment essential for human society

Atsushi Takai
Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies

The ground, which supports infrastructure and superstructures, is essential as the basis for all life and society. However, it faces various environmental problems due to human activities. A prime example is soil contamination from improper management of chemicals and waste. In Japan, another issue arises when excavating ground layers containing arsenic or lead exceeding environmental standards, as handling the excavated soil and rock becomes problematic. Given Japan’s limited land area, securing space for disposing of all soil and rock that contain toxic substances is difficult. Therefore, I am researching and developing technologies to safely utilize soil and rock as geomaterials as much as possible and reasonably preserve the geo-environment. Through developing such low-environmental-impact technologies, I aim to create a social infrastructure that can coexist with the Earth’s environment.
