Efforts towards the protection and utilization of cultural properties and historical materials by kyoto University

The Kyoto University Museum

Kyoto University holds a vast trove of academic specimens and educational materials spanning 125 years of collection and research. This impressive collection includes National Treasures, Important Cultural Properties and other cultural properties of equivalent value, as well as specimens deemed precious by the international community, across a wide range of fields of cultural, natural and technological history.

The Kyoto University Museum has gathered a collection of some 2.6 million primary materials originally stored at individual Faculties, research centers and the like. By storing the specimens in appropriate environments, managing and classifying them, the Archives promotes their broad-based use in leading-edge research and education, both within and outside Kyoto University. Another purpose of the Archives is to create databases, configure networks for the exchange of information and support education, to make the results of research can be made available to the general public.

By providing each Faculty and research center with the results of its efforts, the Archives supports their research and educational activities. With the cooperation of each organization, the Archives is continually enhancing the quality and effectiveness of its operations. The Archives is also planning exhibitions and presentations aimed at Kyoto residents, aiming to serve as a museum open to the general public.
