Kyoto University Hospital: Role as a Disaster Response Base Hospital for Kyoto Prefecture

Prof. Susumu Miyamoto
Kyoto University Hospital

When an earthquake or other natural disaster strikes, Kyoto University Hospital plays many vital roles. The Hospital admits large numbers of injured, supports regional medical facilities and takes center stage in medical relief work. The government of Kyoto Prefecture has designated the Hospital a Disaster Response Base Hospital for this reason.

The March 2019 issue of the Kyoto University Hospital Newsletter, the Hospital’s public-relations magazine, carried a special feature entitled “BCP for Disaster Response.” The section described the hospital’s provisions for drafting a BCP*, improvements to its disaster drill and fire drill, and other efforts by the Hospital to be prepared for disasters. It also included an interview with the Hospital’s Deputy director at the time, Susumu Miyamoto.

※ BCP: Business Continuity Plan. A plan drawn up in advance to minimize impact on business plans and recover quickly when disasters strike, based on consideration of a wide range of risks. A BCP aims to ensure that business activities can continue even in the event of a disaster.
