Embracing different views for inspiring insights

Kenji Tsuda
Graduate School of Letters

Christianity, originating from Judaism in the ancient Mediterranean, evolved by incorporating various peoples and cultures. Early on, groups with divergent views emerged, later deemed heretics. While “heresy” implies a threat to orthodoxy, since modern times, it has been recognized that heretical views often clarified ambiguities and shaped orthodox doctrine through debate. Research on heresy reveals hidden problems and needs within communities and societies, allowing us to analyze response mechanisms. These insights can also serve as clues for understanding contemporary issues like cults and social conflicts.
