Section of Archaeological Heritage Management for Kyoto University, Center for Studies of Cultural Heritage and Inter Humanities (CESCHI): Discovery, survey, research, use and publication of cultural artifacts

Center for Studies of Cultural Heritage and Inter Humanities (CESCHI)

The campuses of Kyoto University are rich in cultural artifacts. From the Kitashirakawa-Oiwakecho Relics at Jomon period to virtually the entire Yoshida Campus and associated facilities in various areas, buried cultural properties are scattered around the campus, tracing the region’s history from prehistoric times to the recent past. The Section of Archaeological Heritage Management manages excavation, survey, research and unearthed artifacts relating to archeological sites on the Kyoto University campus.

The Section’s first objective is to conduct an excavation survey of sites where construction is planned according to campus building plans, so the University’s educational and research activities can proceed smoothly during construction. As an organization of the University, the Section also continuously surveys cultural artifacts, accumulating materials for recreating the history of the Kamohigashi region from prehistoric times onward; develops technologies for research and survey of cultural artifacts and allies them in clinical settings; and applies and publishes its results from multiple perspectives as the unique cultural heritage of Kyoto University.

The Section is a part of Kyoto University’s Center for Studies of Cultural Heritage and Inter Humanities (“CESCHI”), established in April 2019.
