Exploring the human condition via language change

Adam Alvah Catt
Graduate School of Letters

My specialty is historical linguistics, which analyzes languages from a historical perspective, and the main languages I focus on are ancient Indo-European languages such as Vedic, Avestan, and Tocharian. They are no longer used and still contain many mysteries. I work to uncover new aspects of these languages by examining fragmentary manuscripts and deciphering the texts while taking into account their context. The more accurate translations of ancient texts that become available, the more contributions we can make to other fields, such as Buddhist studies and history. When we look at the history of languages, we find that language change is not random but shows certain regularities. Through linguistic research, we can gain a deeper understanding of human history, culture, ways of thinking, and values, and thus the human condition.
