The power of molecules: solving global issues

Aiko Fukazawa
Kyoto University Institute for Advanced Study

Our lives rely on materials with diverse properties. To truly address many of the global challenges, we need to develop new materials with properties and functions that go beyond what conventional science has achieved. My research focuses specifically on properties and functions related to light and electrons. I take two approaches: the first is driven by curiosity (“What properties could emerge if we create a molecule with an unusual structure?”), and the second is goal-oriented (“How can we achieve specific functions that conventional materials cannot?”). If we can design entirely new molecules that give rise to unprecedented phenomena and functions, we can unlock new possibilities for our future.
