Preference: neural and psychological mechanisms

Ryuhei Ueda
Institute for the Future of Human Society

My research is on the cognitive neuroscience of romantic relationships and aesthetic experiences. At first glance, the two may seem unrelated, but they share the commonality of being accompanied by the subjective experience of “liking.” Aiming to unravel the mechanisms of the brain, mind, and heart behind these experiences, I conduct research that combines psychological experiments with functional brain imaging analysis. Sometimes, I collaborate on problems with researchers from different fields, such as art history, aesthetics, and literature. I believe that such interdisciplinary efforts are meaningful not only in that they provide academic knowledge, but also in that they can offer new perspectives on universal things such as love and beauty.
