Art is innovation, innovation is art

Yutaka Yamauchi
Graduate School of Management

As a management scholar, I focus on innovation—creating value. Here, value stems from the disruption of the existing order and is not merely a measure in monetary terms. For instance, Starbucks, emblematic of global capitalism, became a symbol of an era by enabling new self-expression in the 60s-70s counterculture context and lighter self-expression in the 80s-90s neoliberal era. This is an example of picking up on societal changes and creating new expressions by overturning the dominant system of values. Thus, innovation can be seen as aesthetic, an art practice, and a social critique. From this perspective, I approach various issues related to sustainability, gender, and racism.
