The mysteries of organ growth

Masafumi Inaba
Graduate School of Science

Regenerative medicine has made remarkable progress, and in the future, it will probably be possible to culture an entire organ and transplant it into a patient. However, basic research is necessary to get there. Even with current technology, it is possible to create small organs (organoids) from stem cells, but they are far from the size and function of real organs. To make organoids closer to real organs, I want to elucidate how organs achieve their actual size and shape during development. As a key to solving this mystery, I focus on intestinal peristalsis. Peristalsis is closely related to intestinal elongation. I want to elucidate how peristalsis promotes intestinal elongation and use my findings to advance organoid research.
